Malawi

Why are we here?

As one of the poorest countries in the world, Malawi faces challenges in providing adequate infrastructure, classroom space, quality teachers and learning materials to its overwhelming student population. As of 2018, school age children made up ~40% of Malawi’s total population, leading to overcrowded classrooms with a student to teacher ratio of 1:75. This imbalanced classroom environment has led to poor student performance where 10.5% of students will drop out and only 54% of students complete primary education.

Given the extreme poverty, malnutrition, and disease Malawi endures, its current classroom-based education system is unable to sustain the the rapidly growing population of school age children. Learn more here.

What we’re doing to help

Working with our partner, Joshua Orphan & Community Care, we have a program in the city of Blantyre. We have nearly doubled the number of pre-school students we are teaching, and hope to expand our program across several more partner schools.
